Kiev: The II Arbitration School was held

7-11 of May 2014 at the offices of the leading law firms Baker&McKenzie and Asters successfully passed the II Arbitration School jointly organized by the Ukrainian Arbitration Association and the League of Students of the Ukrainian Bar Association.

The intensive five-day program included basic and specialized courses in international arbitration presented in the form of lectures, interactive workshops and mock case. The working language was English. Among the nearly 30 participants this year were representatives from Ukraine, Germany and Georgia. 

The grand opening of the event began with a welcoming speech of the speaker and coordinator of the II Arbitration School Olena Perepelynska. Also, Partner of the Kiev office of Baker&McKenzie Igor Siusel; Executive Director of the Ukrainian Bar Association Alexandra Egert, and the retired Chairman of the League of Students of the Ukrainian Bar Association Anna Gluschenko were invited to present their speeches.

The first working session of the School, which was devoted to issues of arbitration agreements, arbitration initiation, formation of the arbitral tribunal and the acceptance of the first proceedings, started after the wishes of fruitful work and good results. The speakers of the first day were LLD, Professor of the University of Latvia, lawyer Inga Kachevska; Coordinator of the II Arbitration school, Secretary General of the Ukrainian Arbitration Association, Senior Lawyer of Asters law firm Yaroslav Petrov and also Partner of the Moscow office of the international law firm Baker&McKenzie, Vice President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Arbitration Association Vladimir Khvalei

The second working day began with a lecture of Andrey Panov, Senior Lawyer of the Moscow office of the international law firm Norton Rose Fulbright, which was devoted to evidence and proof in international arbitration. Certain aspects regarding interim measures and awards were presented by Counsel at Sayenko Kharenko law firm, the member of the Board of the Ukrainian Arbitration Association Olena Perepelynska. In the afternoon, students of the School were given an opportunity to talk with the President of the International Commercial Arbitration Court and Maritime Arbitration Commission at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mykola Fedosovich Selivon during the visit to the institution mentioned above.

The next lecture day began with a meeting with the representative of the United Kingdom, Maitland Chambers barrister James Clifford. His speech, which concerned the practical aspects of preparing for arbitration hearings, conducting examination and cross-examination of witnesses and experts, was undoubtedly one of the most exciting in the School participants' opinion. In the afternoon, Maciej Zahariashevich, Professor of the Kozminski Polish University, presented his ideas on the enforcement and setting aside of the arbitral awards.

It should be noted that during the first three days, participants were also given the opportunity to enhance their skills during the work in various teams over the mock case under the guidance of qualified coaches Alexander Droug, lawyer of Sayenko Kharenko law firm and Vladimir Yaremko, lawyer of the West Ukrainian branch of LS Arzinger.  

Working session of the fourth day was devoted to separate types of international arbitration, which started from the lecture on dispute resolution in the construction industry presented by Igor Siusel, Partner of the Kyiv office of the international law firm Baker&McKenzie. Also, participants were given the opportunity to attend lectures on maritime and sports arbitration presented by lawyer of International Legal Services Interlegal Dmitry Zagorodnuk and lawyer of Frankfurt office Freshfield Bruckhause Deringer Olga Troschenovich respectively. Ilya Nikiforov, Managing Partner of St. Petersburg office of "Egorov, Afanasiev & Partners", draw attention to the specifics of the most prominent arbitral institutions in his presentation. The last day of the II Arbitration School began with a lecture on investment treaty arbitration, presented by Dmitry Marchukov, Counsel in the International Arbitration and Litigation Practice at "Egorov, Afanasiev and Partners" in Ukraine. At the end of the  intensive training, organizers initiated the Round Table on career opportunities in the sphere of international arbitration, where participants were given the unique opportunity to talk with experienced arbitrators and lawyers, in particular AstapovLawyers' Partner Oleh Beketov; lawyer, Partner of the AGA Partners law firm Ivan Kasynyuk; Sayenko Kharenko law firm's Partner, President of the Ukrainian Arbitration Association, Tatiana Slipachuk, as well as James Clifford and Olga Troschenovich. Roundtable moderator was Elena Makarenko, Head of "International education, international relations" Department of the League of Students of the Ukrainian Bar Association.
After the School representatives of the Ukrainian Arbitration Association and the League of Students of the Ukrainian Bar Association congratulated the participants with personal certificates. With the support of the Law Firm "Muranov, Chernyakov and partners" participants of the School will also be given free access to the resources of the electronic library "Science of Law".
